On July 24th, 2019, the German Institute of Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) published the preliminary version of the ICD-10-GM (International Classification of Diseases) for 2020 on its website.

The ICD-10 version is maintained by the WHO (World Health Organization) and developed annually.

To enable a labeling of diseases in the German healthcare system, a German modification, the ICD-10-GM, is used in Germany. This version is maintained by DIMDI and developed annually. The ICD-10-GM is amongst others used for the definition of DRGs and is therefore relevant for Reimbursement.

DIMDI states that the final ICD version will be published “as soon as the last questions are answered”. We assume that this will happen after the summer break.

Next to a few changes in the notes in terms of clarifications, a new group of diagnosis codes for diseases of the eye (differentiations of macula degeneration) and a new ICD-code for HIV prophylaxis have been established.

Do you need a detailed analysis of the impacts of the new ICD-10-GM version?
