Amendment to German medical fee schedules (GOÄ)

On May-29th 2025, the 129th German Medical Assembly confirmed the amended version of the GOÄ.

The German medical fee schedule (GOÄ) sets the fees, doctors can charge private health insurance companies or self-payers. This applies to billing in private practices and elective medical services in hospitals. The GOÄ had not been amended for decades and need to incorporate medical progress and other aspects of current medical developments, e.g. digital services, into the GOÄ was great. For the future the implement of a continuous development of the GOÄ is planned.

Now, the Federal Ministry of Health called upon to implement the amendment of the GOÄ in legislation.

New is, for example, the abolition of the increase factor in favor of fixed surcharges for additional effort. Analog billing for new methods will change, however the new GOÄ will still be open to innovation. Time tested principles such as the reimbursement of individual services without budgeting and the freedom of therapy are retained, but the weighting of reimbursement will shift between the service areas.
