BMG announces re-activation of minimum levels for nursing staff beginning in August

German Health Minister Spahn reactivates the PpUGV for intensive and geriatric medicine starting in August – and receives diverse resonance.

In March, the German Federal Ministry of Health suspended the minimum level regulation for nursing and care staff to support hospitals during the Corona pandemic and to allow more flexibility in personnel planning.

Now, German Health Minister Spahn has announced to reactivate these minimum levels for nursing and care staff in intensive and geriatric care wards starting in August. Therefore, the minimum level in especially care intensive areas is meant to be guaranteed by the care minimum level regulations. When the other areas will follow has not been declared yet by the BMG.

The vdek as well as the GKV-Spitzenverband (National Associations of Statutory Health Insurance Funds) welcome this decision and perceive it as another clear step towards the return to the normal clinical routine.

Other voices of the DKG (German hospital federation) interpret the reactivation as a premature signal for the overcoming of the pandemic. Furthermore, the requirements for the minimum care levels can hardly be realized in the clinical routine at this point.

“For us, this step seems like minister Spahn will keep on track and continue with his formation process of German healthcare already started before Corona. This shows us once again that we should not loose sight of the already introduced and emerging changes despite the Corona pandemic in order to be prepared for resulting challenges” says Dr. Susanne Habetha of Healthcare Heads.
