FAQ #5 on the new Hybrid-DRGs: Will reimbursement now decrease?

FAQ series: Hybrid-DRGs

The calculation of the German DRG reimbursement is based on the valuation ratio, also known as relative weight, multiplied by the current federal base rate. This means that DRG reimbursement is directly tied to the actual costs.

While reimbursement for the Hybrid-DRGs is also based on costs, including outpatient treatment cases on a pro rata basis.

So, what does that mean:

  • Costs are transferred from the inpatient reimbursement to the Hybrid-DRGs, which consequently reduces the total reimbursement for inpatient treatment cases.
  • At the same time, the reimbursement for the treatment cases that are now billed through Hybrid-DRGs is also reduced.

As a result, both the previous and the new reimbursement are lower.
